The UIB Digital Campus Service provides lecturers with the essential resources and tools to adapt their teaching to the new circumstances
Students and lecturers at the University of the Balearic Islands are making a huge effort to adapt to the situation caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. All teaching on UIB programmes has been done online since 16th March via Aula digital - the UIB's online learning platform. This has meant subject contents have had to be adapted to the new environment and that UIB lecturers have to make the extra effort to learn the possibilities offered by the platform for teaching.
The result of all this joint effort amongst UIB students and lecturers can be seen in the daily connection rates to Aula digital. On average, at 80% of lecturers and 70% of students are following online classes normally every teaching day. Moreover, lecturers are connection at least four out of the five teaching days during the week. At weekends, 40% of lecturers and 50% of students at the UIB are working on Aula digital. Globally, 95% of lecturers and 85% of students are doing classes in these new circumstances. The data do not take into account aspects such as not all lecturers have the same number of teaching hours or whether theory sessions had been condensed into the first semester, with the second semester given over to research.
Campus Digital
Underpinning Aula digital is the UIB Digital Campus Service - the team of professionals who continue to ensure quality learning for students. In recent weeks, they have been responsible for making the essential resource and tools available to lecturers to adapt their teaching to the new circumstances.
In the first week of April alone, they have organised seven online seminars about tools such as BBcollaborate, online questionnaires and the submission and marking of work, with attendance averaging 200 participants. They have also uploaded a wide selection of videos about different aspects that could help both lecturers and students in the daily tasks: from editing teaching videos with mobile devices to exercises for stretching muscles. In addition, in just a few short days, the Campus Digital website has become the main support and service point for the academic community with regard to queries on academic life via Aula digital.
All this work is constantly updated. Indeed, the Digital Campus Service is already working on offering an advanced course for teaching videos. It has also started to collaborate with UNED Balears open university to share experiences.
Student support
The Office of the Pro-Vice Chancellor for Students works to resolve any issues students may have regarding the minimum technology resources required to access, connect and continue with their courses.
