UIB researchers meet with regional premier Armengol to discuss issues linked to COVID-19

The premier of the regional government, Francina Armengol, met with experts from the scientific community in the Balearic Islands this past Tuesday, including researchers from the University of the Balearic Islands.

The aim of the meeting was to discuss issues linked to the COVID-19 virus outbreak. The meeting was held at the premier's office and included the regional minister for health and consumer affairs, Patrícia Gómez, and the director general for health research, training and accreditation, Asunción Sánchez.

Armengol shared her assessment of the actions and steps taken in the Balearics with the experts aimed at containing the pandemic and dealing with the health crisis. All attendees agreed on the need to not let our guard down in terms of the decreed lockdown and isolation measures, as they were the best approach to halting the spread of the virus.

The regional premier expressed her wish to continue holding periodic meetings like this one. The videoconference was attended by:

  • Enrique García Riaza, pro-vice-chancellor for research and internationalisation at the UIB.
  • Maxi San Miguel, professor of condensed matter physics at the UIB and director of the IFISC (CSIC-UIB).
  • Claudio Mirasso, professor of physics and IFISC researcher (CSIC-UIB).
  • Andreu Palou, professor of biochemistry and molecular biology at the UIB.
  • Francesca Serra, professor of nutrition at the UIB.
  • Joan Perelló, senior lecturer in analytical chemistry at the UIB and CEO of the biopharmaceutical firm Sanifit.
  • Roberto de la Rica, UIB researcher in nanobiotechnology.
  • Antonio Oliver, head of the microbiology lab at Son Espases hospital.
  • Marta González Freire, researcher in vascular and metabolic diseases at the IDISBA foundation.
  • Miquel Fiol, scientific director at IDISBA.
  • Joan Llobera, researcher in community medicine at the IBSALUT health service.
  • Maties Torrent, epidemiologist at the health department of Minorca.
  • Sion Riera, head of infectious diseases at Son Espases hospital.
