The UIB and Palma City Council postpone the 1st Conference on Active Ageing and Pain planned for next Thursday

The decision to postpone the event was taken in accordance with health authority instructions released in the last few hours so that health workers can avoid any unnecessary exposure and risk of contagion.

The conference was expected to bring around 170 attendees together, mostly health professionals in the Balearic Islands.

The University of the Balearic Islands and Palma City Council have decided to temporarily postpone the 1st Conference on Active Ageing and Pain, which was due to take place at the UIB campus in Palma on 12th March.

The decision to postpone the event was taken in accordance with health authority instructions released in the last few hours so that health workers can avoid any unnecessary exposure and risk of contagion. The Ministry of Health has recommended that all medical conferences and meetings due to take place in the coming days/weeks be cancelled so that all health staff are available in the event they are needed.

The 1st Conference on Active Ageing and Pain organised jointly by the UIB and Palma City Council was expected to bring around 170 attendees together, mostly health professionals in the Balearic Islands. The conference was due to take place on Thursday 12th March at the UIB campus in Palma, in the Guillem Cifre de Colonya building.

The aim of the conference was to bring together professionals and technicians in elderly care to update them on the latest advances in research into healthy ageing.

The organisers will release the new date for the event in the coming days/weeks.

Changes to teaching activities

In turn, attended classes on the Master's in Health Management and Leadership (a UIB-specific qualification worth 60 ECTS) have been replaced by online training sessions to be provided via recorded video. All students on the programme have been notified by the relevant supervisors at the UIB. This change to the organisation of the programme is also in line with the recommended preventive measures issued by health authorities in order to avoid any unnecessary risk of contagion amongst health workers.

The UIB is adhering to all health authority instructions and has set up a committee to monitor the evolution of the Coronavirus outbreak.

Moreover, the UIB has been in direct contact with students currently on exchanges in the affected areas since last week to resolve any questions they may have and pass on recommendations and information related to the Coronavirus that may lead to changes in their stays.

The UIB has also set up a web portal to share useful information about the Coronavirus with the university community. The UIB is in contact with the Regional Department of Health and Consumer Affairs to ensure all information is constantly updated.

The Department of Tourism, Health and Consumer Affairs at Palma City Council (one of the event organisers) has underlined that the situation in Palma remains completely normal and highlighted the excellent coordination between the authorities and the tourism sector.
