The UIB adopts new measures to guarantee the 2019-20 academic year

The supplementary and extraordinary assessment shall run between 8th June and 24th July.

The registration cancellation deadline is extended until the state of emergency ends, whilst external placements may be taken until the end of the year

The University of the Balearic Islands has implemented further measures to adapt its teaching to the health crisis situation caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and assure teaching quality for students in the final part of the 2019-20 academic year.

The UIB has agreed to adapt the supplementary and extraordinary assessment period and conditions to the current circumstances and the dates for the PBAU exams. The period will run between 8th June and 24th July at the latest, excluding 7th, 8th and 9th July when the PBAU exams will be held.

In accordance with the instructions issued by the Office of the Pro-Vice Chancellor for Teaching on 7th April 2020 regarding the extension and implementation of the action protocol to adapt face-to-face to online teaching, the university shall ensure that the maximum number of subjects may be assessed by continuous assessment or online examinations. Attended exams shall only take place in cases of necessity and will be subject to the health situation, only running where protection and social distancing measures can be guaranteed.

The same office has also released instructions with additional indications regarding curricular and extra-curricular external placements. Moreover, they set out extraordinary measures for cancelling registration in the current and coming year for subjects started in the 2019-20 academic year.

Curricular and extra-curricular external placements

In addition to the indications in the aforementioned instructions issued by on 7th April 2020, centres may, where applicable, extend or undertake external placements until the end of the year, as long as the health measures and placement coordination planned for this year to avoid overlaps so allows. The placements shall be deemed taken in the 2019-20 academic year so students will not have to re-register or, where this step is necessary due to admin procedures, not have to pay for them again.

Additional measure for the 2019-20 academic year

The reasons for requesting registration cancellation for second-semester subjects include any change in family or financial circumstances, as well as a lack of technical resources due to face-to-face teaching being adapted online or to the COVID-19 outbreak.

Furthermore, the university shall maintain the deadline for cancelling registration beyond 30th April whilst the state of emergency remains in effect. In this vein, it is temporarily suspending payment of pending registration fees during the state of emergency.

Temporary and exceptional measures for the 2020-21 academic year

The university has also implemented a set of addition temporary and exceptional measures for the 2020-21 academic year with regard to the attendance regulations, such as not applying the minimum number of credits to be passed during the first and second year to be able to continue undergraduate and master's programmes; not applying the prerequisites for registration; and maintaining current conditions for academic tutoring. Moreover, it will also amend the admissions calendar for UIB-specific masters to enable students to apply for them.
