Official statement from the Rector on the evolution of the Covid-19 disease

All the latest information available at «coronavirus.uib.es»

In light of the evolution of the Covid-19 (Coronavirus) disease and the latest measures adopted by the Spanish Government, the university community faces many doubts and finds itself in a complex situation.

The University of the Balearic Islands (UIB) is permanently in touch with the Balearic Islands’ health and education authorities and scrupulously follows the official recommendations regarding the health emergency this disease has produced.

In this regard, the UIB has set up a monitoring committee that ensures coordination and the adoption of the adequate measures that may be required as the disease evolves. Likewise, the committee are currently working on a protocol.

Being fully aware of our responsibility, and following instructions from the Balearic Government’s Health Department, as well as the advice provided by the members of the monitoring committee, the Rector, Vice-Rectors, Secretary General and General Manager have jointly taken the following decisions:

  1. For the time being, all teaching activities (including lectures, seminars, workshops) will continue as usual both on the main campus as in the Minorca and Ibiza branches.
  2. We advise members of the university community to avoid attending conferences and work meetings outside the Balearic Islands. We invoke individual responsibility and thus request members of the university community not to travel unless it is strictly necessary.
  3. All events due to take place on campus or to be held in any of the university branches should be called off if they involve the gathering of a large number of people, unless their being held is strictly necessary.
  4. All UOM (Seniors University) activities are to be called off, as these address a vulnerable group.

Any further changes, as well as all the information on the disease will be made available through the UIB institutional communication channels (website, Portal del estudiante [Students Portal], Portal PAS-PDI [Administrative and Lecturing Staff Portal], official social media accounts and internal bulletins.

With this aim, we invite all members of the university community to visit our new website <coronavirus.uib.es>through which they can have access to the latest information on the disease, its spread and consequences. Information provided by the regional, national and international health authorities will also be available.

The University of the Balearic Islands remains in close contact with the Spanish Erasmus Agency (SEPIE), which manages Erasmus+ and other mobility programmes, so as to solve doubts and inform our students about those recommendations that may affect their study abroad experience. We have also been in touch with our students in Italy and reminded them that we are here to help.

All enquiries relating to Covid-19 and its impact on university life can be e-mailed to coronavirus@uib.es, and they will swiftly dealt with.

Last but not least, I would like to emphasise that it is absolutely essential that we all remain calm and follow the recommendations of the health authorities. Doing so is an act of responsibility towards those that have or might be infected by the virus, especially the most vulnerable members of society.
