Extended information: the UIB temporarily suspends all face-to-face classes

The measure will come into force on 16th March

The University of the Balearic Islands has temporarily suspended all face-to-face classes from 16th March for the coming two weeks in accordance with the latest measures adopted by the Spanish government and health and education authorities in the Balearic Islands. The decision affects over 16,000 UIB students.

The university is ready to implement alternative teaching methods so that students are able to continue their studies remotely whilst this situation lasts. For this reason, the Vice-Chancellor calls on students to act responsibly and stay at home in order to help contain the spread of the virus.

The remaining activities linked to teaching and research shall continue and services will remain open with the necessary measures to ensure the health of the academic community. The measures set out in the Health Alert Action Protocol for Coronavirus 2019 (SARS-CoV-2) approved by the UIB Governing Council shall be implemented from this time onwards.

Online teaching via Aula digital

Lecturers will boost student tutoring over the UIB's Aula digital online learning platform that enables teachers to provide students with educational material for their programmes (basic content, supplementary material, assessment activities, self-assessment exercises, etc.) and use a set of features on the platform to interact with students or do learning activities.

Face-to-face tutorials and meetings with students cannot be organised. Lecturers will set out operational guidelines with their students. Online teaching provided during the period that classes are suspended shall be included in the subject assessment activities.

Teaching and admin staff (PAS and PDI) services to be maintained

In turn, lecturers and admin and services staff shall continue to provide their services, including staff at units closed to the public, regardless of face-to-face classes being suspended. The UIB will ensure work-life balance: those who care for family members will be offered flexible conditions and the possibility to work from home.

Any change in this regard and all information on the outbreak shall be published on the official channels of the university: website, student portal, PAS-PDI portal, official social media accounts and internal newsletters.

In this regard, the university has set up the <coronavirus.uib.cat> webpage to provide the academic community with all the updated information on the situation and the virus. Information is also available from regional, national and international health authorities.

Specific queries regarding COVID-2019 and its affects on how the university operates can be sent to the following e-mail:  <coronavirus@uib.cat>.
